Debarker model VK450

Valon Kone’s debarker model VK450 is the best-selling rotor debarker for small logs on the market. Almost 200 pcs of corresponding machines have been delivered since the 1980s. The long-lasting popularity of this machine model lies behind its reliability and ease of use, which guarantees the customer constantly high quality debarking results with minimum maintenance costs.

Basic vs. Heavy Duty version

Four different versions of the VK450 debarker model are available: two Heavy Duty (HD) versions (VK450HD and VK450HDSL) and two Basic versions (VK450 and VK450SL). If the logs are sufficiently long, the VK450 debarker model is built primarily with six feedrolls. An SL (short log) version with eight feedrolls can also be built for debarking short and/or poor quality logs.

In the Basic version, the hydraulic system of the feedrolls is known as a closed hydraulic circuit, which works with internal oil flow and the pressure changes in the accumulator. The pressure of each feedroll pair can be adjusted separately using the hand pump included in the machine delivery. This can only be done when the machine is stopped. The debarkers, whose feedrolls are equipped with a closed hydraulic circuit, have the required debarking pressure level set as constant.

In the Heavy Duty version, the hydraulic system of the feedrolls features active hydraulics which generates pressure with a hydraulic power unit. The feedroll pressure has two phases; as a log enters the debarker, the pressure is at a lower level (holding pressure), and a higher level of pressure (working pressure) is triggered when the log is located between the feedrolls (Soft Opening feature). Proportional valves connected to the hydraulic system allow the pressure of the feedrolls to be raised incrementally by increasing the level of pressure. Each pair of rolls has its own valve, which activates automatically each time a log enters between the rolls and the working pressure is engaged. The operator can use the control panel to select a pre-set pressure level from the proportional valve’s memory (there are three pre-set levels). The Soft Opening feature of the feedrolls enables the HD version to debark wood at a 30 % higher infeed speed when compared to the corresponding Basic version.

In the Heavy Duty version, the hydraulic system of the feedrolls can be equipped with a new pre-staging system, which prevents the feedrolls from closing after a log has passed between them. The system leaves the rolls open to wait for the next log, which reduces the strain on the end of the log and minimises wood damage caused in debarking.

Debarking rotor

The VK450 model includes a fixed debarking rotor in the machine frame with a 48 cm diameter. The hydraulically pressed debarking tools (6 pcs) are installed on the outfeed side of the rotor. The design of the tool arms makes them easier to open and minimises wood damage. The special design and the correct materials and production methods ensure the durability of the VK tool arms in any conditions.

The debarking tool tips that perform the actual debarking are made of durable hard metal. The tool tips are fastened to the arm with bolts, which means that they can be easily replaced. Different tool tip versions are available for debarking various types of wood, for example.

Centring infeed conveyor

All VK450 machines are supplied with a centring VK infeed conveyor, model VK450. The infeed conveyor flap features a pre-opening function, which is required when feeding small or light logs in.

All VK450 debarkers feature FibreMax feed rolls with replaceable inserts.
